The nine-month selection process to determine the 18th class began with hundreds of nominations and ended with two coaches, two players, a referee and Tipps. He joins Oklahoma women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale, former referee June Courteau, Canyon High coach Joe Lombard and former players Jackie Stiles and Natalie Williams in the 2016 class, which was formally announced at the WNBA All-Star Game at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. this weekend.
Tipps was a long-time volunteer and chairman (1979-91) of AAU girls’ basketball and the AAU girls basketball circuit grew tremendously under his purview. Tipps is a former member of the nominating committee for the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and served on the Olympic Selection Committee for Women’s Basketball. He earned his 25-year silver and 35-year gold AAU pin for years of service and was named to the AAU Volunteer Hall of Fame in 1991.
He and the rest of the six-person class will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn. on June 11, 2016 and will give the Hall 151 total honorees.
